The Y-split is a chain link that branches in two perpendicular directions. It is often used to add bulk to blueprint or opening chains that circle the outside of the board by adding short branches to the inside.
The perpendicular branches may push petals into future links of the other branch if not properly managed. This is easy to avoid by making sure your chain is compact (though it may still result in cut chains).
