The sprout is a particular form of the corner chain. The spawner often produces these chains because spawn rules disfavor petals of similar colors spawning adjacent to each other; as such, they often spawn two spaces away in any direction or diagonally adjacent instead, giving rise to this pattern. One should be careful as spawner-produced variants of this chain are unlikely to be compact, and as such can be broken by a later spawn.

It is a good pattern to look for in the midgame because it is useful when playing with an irregular open space in the middle of a relatively full board.
