A straight chain is a simple chain wherein one group pops, sending a petal in the same direction of the initial collision, which in turn crashes into another group of the same color. It is easy to set up around the outside of the board and therefore commonly seen in blueprint chains and openers.
Straight chains are reversible—they can be set off from either end. As such, a chain with straight links can be easily repurposed if one side becomes a more convenient head.
