Versus Mode
Versus Mode is one of the primary groups of modes in Petal Crash, the others being Score Attack and Puzzle Mode. In Versus Mode, two players compete for victory.
The objective of Versus Mode is to either clear more petals than your opponent and score a victory on the battle bar, or to cause them to fill up their board and have no valid moves remaining, which results in overgrowth. These win conditions can vary depending on the ruleset in use.
Story Mode can also be considered a sub-mode of Versus Mode as it is essentially a series of standard Tug-of-War battles.
Standard rulesets
Petal Crash has three standard rulesets for Versus Mode:
- Tug-of-War, considered the "main" competitive ruleset
- Trash Attack, where garbage falls instantly and overgrowth is the only win condition
- Clear Contest, where the battle bar is long and chains are given a clear bonus, but no garbage is sent
Custom rulesets
Petal Crash also allows you to create custom rulesets. While they can't be saved, they can be configured by selecting the Custom option from the pre-start menu. The following are configurable:
- Hit Stock: the number of lives (1-5), as long as the battle bar is on
- Battle bar options
- Battle bar: on or off
- Hit target: the initial size of the battle bar (15-70)
- Decay speed: controls how fast the battle bar shrinks, or decay can be turned off
- Chain bonus: controls a bonus (0-2x) to changes on the battle bar for chain clears
- Chains only: if on, only chain clears count towards the battle bar
- Garbage options
- Base garbage: changes the value of
GarbageMultipler
in the garbage formula - Chain power: changes the value of

in the garbage formula - Color clear: if on, clearing garbage blocks leaves behind petals of the same color as the group that burst to clear them
- Instant drop: if on, garbage is accepted fully-formed rather than as a 4-turn spawner
- Escalation: if on,
